DirectQuery and Import modes

On this page, you will learn how the visual function with this two modes to connect to your data.

DirectQuery mode: Allows Power BI to access data directly from the source, executing real-time queries.

Import mode: Power BI imports and stores a copy of the data internally. Offers fast performance but requires manual or scheduled updates.

Matrix Planner can be used in DirectQuery and Import connection modes. If you use DirectQuery, you'll just need to complete the Writeback Connection Configuration to be able to save your data. After your data is saved, the visual will automatically refresh all the visuals in the report, allowing you to see the latest changes performed. If you use Import mode, you'll need to complete the Writeback Connection Configuration to save your data and complete the Model Connection Configuration to update your semantic model. In this case, after your data is saved, the semantic model will update automatically. Once this process is finished, the visual will automatically refresh all the visuals in the report, allowing you to see the latest changes performed. This means that when you are in Import mode, you don't need to manually update the semantic model after making any changes, as the visual will handle the model updates for you.
